Today we remember the day of days, June 6, 1944, when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy.
As we celebrate this Memorial Day, we look to the lyrics to the WW1 rally song "Over There" performed by James Cagney, in his portrayal of George M. Takes place on a scenic, flat closed road course during the peak of autumn in historic Social Circle. It starts on the corner of Forrest and Memorial in Social Circle and, after proceeds directly through cheering crowds in downtown Social Circle, down Cherokee and past Magnolia Manor, Blue Willow Inn, and Henry Funeral Home. Turn right on Oak and out to the Primary School, and Ball fields. You finish the last half mile running down Dogwood and finish at the Fire Department downtown to music and food. And it’s a Peachtree Road Race Qualifier, for those of you who are competitive. The Friendship 5k will begin at 9:50am, 10 minutes ahead of the parade. T Shirts for all entrants, medals for men/women 1st, 2nd, 3rd. January 23, 1945: We pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. "During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island's highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag."
